Bible encounters

We are in the process of creating options for self-guided readings of studies of God’s Word. We are all busy and sometimes it’s difficult to know where to go to find sound opportunities to encounter God’s Word. The internet is overflowing with both good and bad options so we want to take out some of the guess-work for you and make your Bible-encounter next step easier.

Currently we have two main options: daily Bible readings (both short and long) and studies (for deeper focused exploration - scroll down to last page).

Regardless of your choice, we suggest a similar approach:

a) begin with prayer, asking God to help you understand what you read or study;
b) do the reading or study’
c) thank God afterward for what you learned;
d) ponder your encounter until you do the next one.

Longer daily reading PLANS

This will give you a good grounding in, and overview of: Biblical beginnings, worship, wisdom, prophecy, the Gospel of Jesus, the history of the early church, Christian theology, and an Apostle’s letter to one congregation. Read one chapter per day of the following books in this order:

  1. Genesis – 50 chapters: the origin of everything, including humans, and God’s relationship with us both before and after we fell from grace;

  2. John – 21 chapters: the ministry of Jesus and his apostles and how He came to redeem the world;

  3. Psalms 1-50 – 50 chapters: written mostly by King David, these are the lyrics to worship songs and contain much inspiration for day-to-day living;

  4. Proverbs – 31 chapters: written mostly by King Solomon, these are words of wisdom for living an effective and productive life;

  5. Ephesians – 6 chapters: written by the great evangelist Paul to Christians in Ephesus to teach about Jesus, salvation, and how to live the Christian life;

  6. Psalms 51-100 – 50 chapters: written mostly by King David, these are the lyrics to worship songs and contain much inspiration for day-to-day living;

  7. Romans – 13 chapters: written by Paul, this is the Bible’s most comprehensive and deep writing about Christian theology;

  8. Isaiah – 66 chapters: one of Israel’s greatest prophets with many profound predictions about the coming Messiah (Jesus) written around 740 B.C.

  9. Psalms 101-150 – 50 chapters: written mostly by King David, these are the lyrics to worship songs and contain much inspiration for day-to-day living;

  10. Acts – 28 chapters: the history of the growth of the early church, the exploits of the apostles, including Paul, and the Holy Spirit’s power in their lives.

Shorter daily reading PLANs

(a focused theme for 20 days)

For each topic there are 20 daily Bible encounters. You can do one each day but sometimes it’s hard to commit that time … so we suggest giving yourself a month to do them (in which case we recommend you do 5 of the daily encounters each week). We will try keeping these to 2-5 minutes in length.

Look at the list of Bible encounters below, pick the one you desire or need for the next month, then go back to the same document and work your way through all 20 before moving on to a new topic.

We will add 1-2 new ones each month so there will always be many for you to choose from.

20 days of God’s promises

There are hundreds, if not thousands of promises that God has made about Himself and His relationship with mankind as Father and Creator. Here are 20 verses to read and meditate on that we hope will encourage you as you follow Jesus in the power of the Holy Spirit.

20 days of parables of Jesus

Why did Jesus speak in parables. Did everyone understand Him? Did anyone? Here are 20 of His parables for you to ponder.

20 days of our identity in Christ

Many of us struggle throughout our lives with figuring out our identity and significance within the world around us. As believers and followers of Christ, we too struggle with our new identity as a child of God and a new creation in Christ. The question moves from “who am I?” to “Whose am I?”  There are dozens of Scriptures in God’s Word that will help you to answer that question. Here are 20 that will help you seek your identity in your Lord Jesus Christ.

20 days of prophecies of Jesus, and how they were fulfilled

From, “In the beginning,” in Genesis 1:1 to “Amen,” in Rev.22:21, the whole Bible has God’s scarlet thread of redemption for mankind weaved throughout His Word. There is a saying that helps us as we study God’s Word regarding Christ and His fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies. The Old Testament Is the New Testament Concealed, The New Testament Is the Old Testament Revealed. Here are 20 of the more than 300 prophecies regarding Christ.

Studies FOR individualS

(may also be of value for group studies)

Studies are Bible encounters that involve a much greater commitment of time, energy and interest. They can be powerfully rewarding by helping the student begin to link individual Scriptures with others, see persistent themes, and also get a better view of both the lower story (life played out on earth) and the upper story (life played out in heaven).

New studies will be added as per the timetable below. Note: there will be additional studies rolling out for HCC this year but they are intended for groups who will engage as a learning community.
